Acne: a skin condition characterized by red pimples on the skin, especially on the face, due to inflamed or infected sebaceous glands and prevalent chiefly among adolescents.

you should have learned the following key points:

  • There are three common skin types: oily skin, dry skin and combination skin.
  • Oily skin is the skin type that has the most frequent acne breakouts. To get rid of acne with oily skin, you’ll need a treatment regimen that clears clogged pores and fights acne causing bacteria. The most common acne treatment mistakes that people with oily skin make are over-washing and over-drying their skin.
  • Individuals with dry skin may also get acne breakouts. In this case, the best treatment is to use an exfoliating cleanser as well as a moisturizer to reduce the dry, dead skin cells on the surface that may cause acne.
  • Individuals with combination skin may experience acne breakouts in their T-zone. Spot-treating T-zone blemishes and treating the skin to improve its overall health is the best course of action.
  • No matter what your skin type, acne-free skin begins from the inside out with diet and lifestyle choices.

When the breakouts won’t quit

There are some things we may miss about our teenage years—say, the ability to stay up till all hours and then sleep till noon. One thing that’s not on our nostalgia lists?  A sprinkling of pimples on our faces. But it turns out that many of us are noticing blemishes at the same time we’re encountering wrinkles.

A 2012 study published in the Journal of Women’s Health found that acne affects nearly half of all women ages 21 to 30, a quarter of women ages 31 to 40, and 12% of women ages 41 to 50. No matter how old we are, pimples usually form in the same time-honored way: Pores—which contain oil glands—become blocked, letting dirt, bacteria, and cells build up and form a plug.

Why it happens
For most women, hormonal changes, either around the monthly cycle or during a menopausal shift, are the culprit. But dietary imbalances and stress also cause flare-ups. “Acne in adults is like a whistle blow. Often it’s a sign that something else not quite right is going on,” says Michael Murray, ND, a naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine.

Here, a range of solutions for sufferers.

New: Fewer refined carbs

“Eating chocolate or a lot of junk food doesn’t by itself seem to cause acne, but not having a balanced diet and eating too many refined carbs can cause problems,” says Albert Lefkovits, MD, director of the Park Avenue Center for Advanced Medical and Cosmetic Dermatology in New York City. In a 2007 study, Australian researchers found that people who followed a low-glycemic index (GI) diet (which is low in refined carbohydrates like those found in white bread) had a 22% decrease in acne lesions, compared with a control group that ate more high-GI foods. Scientists suspect that raised insulin levels from the carbs may trigger a release of hormones that inflame follicles and increase oil production.

New: Less dairy

A 2006 Harvard study found that girls who drank two or more glasses of milk daily had about a 20% higher risk of acne than those who had less than a glass a week. Studies published last year and in 2008 suggested that fat-free milk in particular, which is higher in sugar than whole milk, might be a culprit. (Another hypothesis is that hormones in dairy products play a role.) If you regularly drink fat-free, consider switching to 1% milk or nondairy nut milks (look for those that have fewer than 10 g of sugar per serving).

acne 2

New: Blue light therapy

These powerful rays penetrate follicles to kill off acne-causing bacteria. For severe cases, photodynamic therapy adds a topical solution called Levulan to blue light therapy. Note that these treatments can cause temporary redness and may not be covered by insurance .

Long used to treat high blood pressure, prescription Aldactone (spironolactone) is now getting a second life as a treatment for hormonal acne. The drug (a tablet taken orally) blocks receptors of the hormone androgen, helping to limit the testosterone surges that can prompt pimples.

Natural: Tea tree oil

Less irritating than its chemical cousin benzoyl peroxide, tea tree oil has a long history of fighting mild to moderate acne outbreaks. The oil, which comes from the leaves of a tree native to Australia, has antiseptic properties that help reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin and quell inflammation in skin cells. “We’ve seen it work against a wide range of organisms, including 27 of the 32 strains of acne-causing bacteria,” says Murray. Multiple studies, including a review last year in the International Journal of Dermatology, back the plant’s power. You can find tea tree oil in a wide variety of soaps, skin washes, and topical solutions. Look for a minimum concentration of 5% of the oil (up to 15% for more severe acne).

Natural: Salt reduction

Some doctors suspect that sodium has consequences for skin, because the iodine frequently found in table salt and some seafood may worsen acne breakouts. Stick to low-sodium versions of packaged foods, and try to keep your overall salt consumption below 1,500 mg a day.

Natural: Stress management

“Stress doesn’t create skin disease on its own, but it can make any existing issues worse,” says Beth McLellan, MD, a dermatologist at NYU Langone’s Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health in New York City. Researchers haven’t established just why stomach-churning anxiety creates skin blemishes, but they point the finger at stress hormones such as cortisol for increasing inflammation levels in the body and stimulating oil glands. In any case, managing stress through exercise, meditation, or whatever method helps calm your nerves may also calm your skin.

Tried & true: Topical antibacterials and retinoids

For mild to moderate acne, dermatologists often suggest a cleanser with bacteria-killing benzoyl peroxide (to minimize irritation, try 10% strength), along with a prescription topical antimicrobial such as clindamycin or erythromycin. Stronger cases may call for prescription retinoids (such as Retin-A or Tazorac), which “are really the standard of care for most acne therapy,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Newer drugs, such as Epiduo and Ziana, combine retinoids with antibacterials and may be more effective than separate products. Because retinoids also have antiwrinkle properties (they help stimulate collagen production), they can be especially beneficial for adult acne sufferers.

Tried & true: Birth control pills

Oral contraceptives can help normalize hormonal surges and regulate monthly cycles so that oil glands don’t go into overdrive, says Zeichner. Doctors may prescribe one of four brands of birth control pills—Yaz, Beyaz, Estrostep, and Ortho Tri-Cyclen—that are FDA approved for treating acne. As always, patients taking oral contraceptives should be aware of potential risks, including blood clots.

Tried & true method: Salicylic acid

Among the most popular OTC remedies is salicylic acid, which is incorporated into gels, wipes, creams, and sprays. The acid reduces swelling and redness and unplugs pores. To keep skin from becoming too dry, look for formulas geared to adult women, not teens (aim for 2% salicylic acid to start). Some skin care lines offer salicylic acid products that address acne and wrinkles alike.

Fathers and Small Children

Fathers and Small Children

Fathers and Small Childrentodler1

When babies become toddlers, parents must go beyond nurturing them and begin to address two additional needs: supporting their toddler’s exploration and setting appropriate limits for the child. Through playing with their toddlers, fathers take a special role in achieving these two goals. Children learn from them how to solve problems and how to get along with others.

We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today. ~Stacia Tauscher

Fathers spend a larger proportion of their time playing with their young children than mothers do, and they tend to be more boisterous and active in their play. Most children enjoy this kind of play. Even if their fathers spend less time with them than their mothers, fathers become salient, or meaningful and special, to their children through play.

When fathers play with their toddlers, they are not just entertaining them. They are providing a safe, yet challenging arena for toddlers to learn how to interact with the world and with others. Through rough-and-tumble play, fathers create obstacles for their children and demand respect for limits and boundaries. At the same time, they challenge their children and encourage them to explore their own strength, their ability to do new things, and their impact on the world around them. Toddlers who must work out for themselves how to achieve goals-such as retrieving a ball that is just out of reach in their father’s hand or wrestling their father to the ground-are practicing important problem-solving skills. In-fact, when fathers are good at playing with their young children, these children score higher on tests of thinking and problem-solving skills.

“Little kids talk about the strangest things. They really do.”
―
Stephen Chbosky

Playing with fathers also helps children develop emotional knowledge, so that they can identify their own emotions, acknowledge the emotional experiences of others, and describe the causes of emotions. Toddlers must also learn emotional regulation, the ability to express emotions responsibly and control their behavior. To understand how much emotional regulation develops during early childhood, one can picture a toddler in the midst of an angry temper tantrum, holding his breath until he gets his way. Contrast this with a four-year-old who feels frustrated that the rain has ruined his plans to play football, yet moves beyond those feelings and engages in a board game with his sister instead. When children understand their emotions and know how to control them, it makes them more popular with other children.

Toddlers need to get off the soccer field and onto the playground. Children need to get out of the gym and into neighborhood stickball games. We need to give kids room to create their own rules, set their own terms, and move their bodies in their own ways.

Darell Hammond

The father’s influence on emotional development is not limited to play, but also comes through direct teaching and daily interaction. Studies have shown that, when fathers are affectionate and helpful, their children are more likely to get on well with their brothers and sisters. When children have fathers who are emotionally involved-that is, they acknowledge their children’s emotions and help they deal with bad emotions-they score higher on tests of ’emotional intelligence’. Moreover, they tend to have better relationships with other children and behave less aggressively. Fathers’ involvement in their young children’s care can even last well into adulthood. Mothers seem to have much less impact in this area of emotional regulation and peer relationships than fathers. It really is fathers who can have a major influence on helping their children build strong social relationships during childhood and later in life.

When I have grown so tall,
That once I was quite little
And my feet were very small.

Here is my foot
So tiny, so small
to hang somewhere
upon your wall.

Just for you I have made,
Prints of my little feet.
Then you can remember when,
I was so small and sweet.

Soon I will grow and baby days
Will all be in the past,
But you can know my love for you,
Will always always last.

The pitter patter of little feet
Leave behind something dear and sweet
A precious treasure for me to keep
The memories of your little feet.

Reasons Why Companies Fail to Hire Top Sales Talent and also Hiring Tips

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.

Michael Jordan

Every aim-full company could be win the championship not only one match, therefor they always busy to finding the new talent for their company.

As executives create their strategic sales plans for the year, the conversation eventually turns to recruiting top sales talent to execute those plans. Yet, there are three reasons why companies fail to close the deal with top sales candidates.

Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character.

John Wooden

1. They don’t have clarity on the role. During interviews, top salespeople ask a ton of questions about the role and expectations. They’ll ask…

  • How would you describe a day in the life of a salesperson in your company?
  • What territory would I be assigned?
  • What expectations would the company have of me in the first year?

Hard work without talent is a shame, but talent without hard work is a tragedy.

Robert Half

2. Re-assess what you really need.

The exercise of reading so many applications made it more clear to me what qualifications I really needed. True, it would have made more sense to have thought this through more clearly before advertising, but since when do we live in a perfect world?

I knew I needed fantastic writing ability, eagerness to learn, and an enthusiasm to work with me, specifically. I also remembered that I had taken on a new ghostwriting client on a subject in which I didn’t have a lot of professional background. So I kept an eye out for applicants who weren’t only qualified but who happened to have some familiarity with this field–even though I hadn’t mentioned it in my advertisement.

hiring process1

3. They haven’t finalized compensation. It’s no surprise that top salespeople want to know how they make money. They want to know…

  • How does the compensation plan work?
  • What will I earn if I meet goal in my first year?
  • If you can’t explain and show the compensation plan, top salespeople get turned off.

“Everyone has talent. What’s rare is the courage to follow it to the dark places where it leads.”
 Erica Jong

4. They can’t answer common sales questions. You expect your salespeople to sell the value your company brings to bear. Top talent will ask you those questions during the interviews. Questions like…

  • Why do people buy from your company?
  • What is unique about your products?
  • Who is your biggest competitor and what is your strategy to defeat them?

“Your talent determines what you can do. Your motivation determines how much you are willing to do. Your attitude determines how well you do it.”
 Lou Holtz

5. They have not clear algorithm

Every company should have an algorithm for hiring.eg

  • % of experience (Past clients status )
  • % of skill set
  • % of degree education
  • % of market reputation

One well cultivated talent, deepened and enlarged, is  worth 100 shallow faculties. The first law of success in this day, when so many things are clamoring for attention, is concentration-to bend all the energies to one point, and to go directly to that point, looking neither to the right nor to the left.

William Matthews

6. Fish where the fish are

Figure out where the best candidates for your company would be hanging out, whether virtually or physically. If you’re in the market for technical talent, drop by a hackathon or demo day. If you’re looking for someone in sales, a trade show would be a great place to see someone in their element and get a sense of how they deal with customers. Looking for someone with a niche passion? There’s likely a meet up for it.

As boring as they might sound, conferences can also be a great way to attract talent by letting you pitch the business in a more conversational way. “It gives you a chance to express the vision behind the company in a non-interview setting and to meet one-on-one casually,” says Etahan Song, co-founder and CEO of Frank and Oak. “We’ve started sending our team members to various conferences because it gives the company a voice and a face, and that’s much more attractive for employees.”

 recruitment_process_diagram

7. They have not the data of present scenario.

Company should have to know the knowledge-bank of their area.

“If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it, you almost don’t have to manage them.”
Jack Welch

8. Always be hiring (or Thinking about hiring)

Start thinking about everyone you meet as a potential hire. “I keep a pool of names in a database of people I’ve met that I’d like to work with someday; they’re coded in our Sales-force as ‘prospective hires,'” says wee Spring CEO Allyson Downey. She takes the “long view” and says she’s casually building a relationship with someone who would be a great CTO candidate in 6 or 12 months. Downey taps her hit list when she’s ready to hire, but if she needs to cast a wider net, she uses Cream.HR, which provides stats on candidates based on problem solving, innovation, task management and other dimensions. “We’ve found it 100x more reliable than a resume screen — it’s like Moneyball for hiring,” says Downey.

The team at AWeber makes a point to reply to every single applicant, which might seem like a daunting and fruitless task. “They may not be a fit for the job they applied for, but you never know when you might have another open position that would be perfect for them,” says AWeber’s Cohen, who says individual responses build goodwill. “Maybe that person will apply with us again down the line, or maybe they’ll speak well about us if they know someone else that’s interested in a position with us.”

9. Recruit your team to help recruit

Of course, promoting from within is a great way to incentivize and reward hard work, but sometimes you need fresh meat, and you should empower your team to help bring in great candidates. After all, no one knows your company better than your own team, so they should be on the lookout for talented, interesting people who would bring new talents and skills to the team. You can reward successful referrals with a cash bonus or with other prizes, like gift cards or perks, says Cohen of AWeber, who adds that “engaging your employees in the recruiting process is also a really cost effective way to find good candidates.” Even if your team isn’t bringing in the candidates, they should be involved in the interview process — they’re the ones who are going to be working with the person every day.

10. Use the “two strikes” rule.

This was critical. I had to cut down the pile. First, I set aside 70 or so applications simply because the applicants couldn’t write well, or because they seemed to have cut and pasted the same application for many jobs. After that, I went through them again, employing what I called the “two strikes” rule.

If I found two mistakes in an application–more than one misspelling or a missed word, for example–I tossed the application. This meant rejecting some amazing people, but it was necessary. One mistake might just mean that you’re human but two mistakes suggest you didn’t proofread. If someone doesn’t pay attention to detail when applying, why would that improve once they’ve got the job?

11. Insist on a test run.

When I had identified some great candidates, I asked several to do an initial tryout research assignment.

These were all legitimate projects, if small ones, but they were also tests. So, I intentionally left a few things out, like for example not mentioning the deadline. One applicant–who went straight to it, stayed up half the night to finish and sent me the assignment at 3 a.m.–made a fantastic impression. Let’s just say that not everyone who had a tryout came close to that kind of standard.

Hire people who are better than you are, then leave them to get on with it. Look for people who will aim for the remarkable, who will not settle for the routine.

David Ogilvy

12. Skills Can Be Taught, Personality Can’t

“A great business runs on culture, and culture runs on the chemistry and personality of people. So without exception I hire for personality and “fit” first, skills second. Obviously a candidate must have the necessary
practical qualifications for the job (a designer must be able to design, an accountant must be able to. well.. account, etc.). But given two similarly qualified people I will always, always hire the one with the best personality and who seems to be the most likely to fit with our culture. Skills can be taught and developed, personality can’t. And I have found -again almost without exception – that the majority of bad hires we-ve made (which fortunately have been few) were more often bad hires because of personality and culture fit.”

Today, currently, business owners can go out and find out if the person they are hiring is eligible to work here or if they are not. We need to think about how we are impacting workers.

Gary Miller

13. Check Their Social Media

“I think the best practice I’ve stumbled upon for hiring a new employee would be to vet them thoroughly using social media. Find all their links, from Twitter to LinkedIn and especially Faceboook and *gasp* MySpace if they have one (that alone is a red flag) Taking the time to see how they interact with others online is a good measurement for how they will interact with with their co-workers. It can also provide insight into their character or personal habits. I.e. do they talk about calling in sick online? Yes, that still happens.”

Social media is the future, with employers recognizing they need to start hiring people with the right skills.

Ryan Holmes

14. Verify the information

“Our best advice for business owners is to make sure you try to know everything you can about your potential employee before you hire. This can be done by conducting a thorough interview that will not only get you answers to all of your questions that you may have, but is also a good opportunity to clarify anything on the resume. Once the interview is over, you must now “fact check”. Verify all information on the resume, as well as anything that may have popped up in the actual interview. A good background check should be conducted on all employees. Unfortunately, given this economy, some applicants will say and do anything to get a job. Statistics show that 30% of business failures are attributed to employee theft, which can completely shut down a small business.”

We hire people who want to make the best things in the world.

Role of Self-Control in our life

Role of Self-Control in our life

Role of Self-Control in our life

Role of Self-Control in our life

“If you conquer yourself, then you conquer the world”
Paulo Coelho

Definition of self-control: restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires

Self-control separates us from our ancient ancestors and the rest of the animal kingdom, thanks to our large prefrontal cortices. Rather than responding to immediate impulses, we can plan, we can evaluate alternative actions, and we can refrain from doing things we’ll regret. We can also take advantage of these innately human abilities by developing wisdom and willpower.

It’s true that you can’t change other people, by stick method, but you can change yourself – by taking control and on the reflection of that act other people may be change.

Better still, self-control is a proven and significant key to success. Let’s see how you can develop your own self-control even further, through understanding and using two key ingredients: willpower and habit – providing an incredible way to free yourself, and be more successful at the same time.

The secret of success is in learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you,…,If you do that , you are in control of your life…If you don’t, the life controls you.

Many of us are constrained by our habits and a certain degree of lack of self-control. Whether it’s in the realms of actively exercising regularly, resisting another chocolate bar, the way we deal with emails, or high level decision-making, better self-control can boost our productivity, improve our health, make us more money, and even lengthen our lives! Utilizing self-control, means realizing, and displaying your inner power – whereas lack of self-control is a weakness.

If you want to succeed – take control of your-self!

There is a direct connection between self-control and success, as extensive long-term research proves, and using this knowledge to your advantage can turbo-charge your own success.

In the ’60s, Mischel, a sociologist, conducted an experiment to see if young children could resist instant gratification. He offered them the choice of having one marshmallow now, or two marshmallows if they could wait 15 minutes. Many chose instant gratification rather than exerting the willpower to wait. Years later, he tracked down some of the children, and discovered something startling. Those with high self-control – those who had held out for two marshmallows – grew into healthier, happier and wealthier adults. Those with low willpower did less well academically (despite having similar IQs). They were more likely to be in low-paying jobs, have fewer savings, were more overweight, more likely to have drugs or alcohol problems, and had difficulty maintaining relationships. They were also almost 400% more likely to have a criminal conviction.

“First we make our habits, then our habits make us.”

self control 1

These results were confirmed by a similar experiment in New Zealand reported by psychologist Roy F. Baumeister, who concluded that “Willpower is one of the most important predictors of success in life.”

Here are some ideas to help boost your understanding and practice of self-control, willpower and habit – and therefore take your success to another level:

Treat Willpower Like a Muscle, Role of Eating and Sleeping

Willpower -control deliberately exerted to do something or to restrain one’s own impulses or the ability to resist temptation and restrain our impulses – is the most important factor in achieving a successful and happy life. It is more significant than money, intelligence, looks, or background. It helps to consider that willpower is like a muscle that can be trained and strengthened with practice and improved over time. Even exercising small acts of willpower, like sitting up straight, can pay off by reinforcing longer-term self-control in other activities.

Also like a muscle, willpower can get tired if you overuse it. Exercises about willpower, making choices or decisions and taking the initiative, all use up the same sort of energy. The more decisions we make, the weaker our willpower can become.

Willpower is also similar to a muscle, in that when its strength depletes, it can be revived with glucose – as has been evidenced in research. As we all know, a sugar rush is not a good option, so it’s best to eat healthy food regularly to maintain blood sugar levels. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance. Sleeping and eating well – planning for the slow-release burning of healthy calories – are most important.

The impact of this phenomenon can have extreme consequences. A famous Israeli study in 2011, discovered that judges making decisions whether or not to grant parole did so early in the morning, in roughly 65% of cases after lunch, and hardly ever just before.

Sleep
When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in above, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep—every night—is one of the best moves you can make.

Research shows that self-control has a physical basis and is affected by eating and sleeping – and that significant decisions you make can vary depending on whether they’re made in the morning or evening, and before or after a snack.

self control 2

Be Aware of Decision fatigue
Making decisions can actually exhaust your ‘stores’ of willpower. Psychologist Roy F Baumeister’s practical experiments asked people to make small decisions, followed by tests of willpower (which proved to be weakened). This demonstrated that there is a finite store of mental energy for exerting self-control. In essence, making choices saps willpower – a condition termed ‘decision fatigue’. Use this knowledge to help you conserve your own self-control and use it most effectively.

Resistance to making decisions arises from a fear of reducing options. To those decision-weary judges in the Israeli research, denying parole is easier – it maintains the status quo and prevents a potentially risky parolee committing crime again – but it also leaves more options open: the judge can still release the prisoner at a future date. This is not necessarily the best option – just the easiest and safest. Better to make good decisions with a fresh mind, now that we know the effects.

Where there are fewer decisions to be made, there is less decision fatigue. These days, there are so many choices to make, especially in the working day. It’s easy to underestimate just how tiring it is to make any kind of decision – whether big or small, they all add up. Choosing what to have for breakfast, which task to do first, how much to spend – all deplete willpower. The cumulative effect can pay its toll. When willpower weakens (or is used up) our impulses to drink, eat, spend, and say silly things are stronger. And like the depleted parole judges, we become inclined to take the easiest option, even though that may not be the best choice.

“The best decision makers,” Baumeister says, “are the ones who know when not to trust themselves.”

Baumeister’s studies show that people with the best self-control are those who structure their lives in order to conserve their willpower. They don’t fill their days with back-to-back meetings. They maintain habits that eliminate too many choices. Zuckerberg, inventor of Facebook, wears the same outfit every day. President Obama wears either a blue or grey suit. Instead of making a decision each morning whether or not to exercise, successful people make ongoing arrangements to exercise with somebody else. Instead of using up their willpower on trivial choices, they conserve it for important decisions and emergencies.

Planning for all decisions in advance – or eliminating the need to make any – is a great way to keep things – and yourself – under control. So think and plan ahead, and set up systems that will make things easy for you.

Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine (and it improves your emotional intelligence). Even, simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses.

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
―
Marcus Aurelius

Understand The Power of Habit
Willpower alone is not enough. It’s hard to maintain, because it can become exhausted, especially when the pressure is on. Habits, however, are automatic and come as naturally as breathing.

We need to make changes that are long-lasting – and establish good habits that become a way of life. Most choices we make might feel like the result of thoughtful decision-making, but they’re not: they’re habits. In time, each of our decisions – about the food we eat, what we say to our children each evening, and how frequently we exercise – all have a huge impact on our health, productivity, wealth, and happiness in the longer term.

Establishing good habits in these areas will help you to operate well in all conditions – dispensing with the need to resort to willpower, while still succeeding in maintaining self-control.

If we can lower the barriers to taking action on positive things, we can begin to form good habits. If we put up barriers to negative activities, we can break any bad habits.

At the core of every habit is a neurological loop with three parts: a cue, a routine, and a reward. Let’s use the example of developing a habit to go running each morning. Choose a simple cue (eg – getting out of bed), establish a routine that is triggered by that cue (lacing up your trainers or always going for a 3 mile run at 5am) and think of the reward (endorphin rush).

Apply this principle to other behaviors and habits in your life, and use them to create better ones. Once you’re aware of how your habit works, and can recognize the cues and rewards, you’re on the way to changing it – for the better.

“Psychologists tell us we can change our attitudes by changing our physical actions. For example, you actually feel more like smiling if you make yourself smile. You feel more superior when you make yourself stand tall than when you slouch.”Dr.David J.Schwartz

Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

“Circumstances are not the creature of man,but Man is the creature of circumstances”

Use the 20 second  rule
Because our willpower is limited, lasting change might seem impossible to achieve. And when it fails, we fall back into old habits and take the path of least resistance. Achor lists a very powerful tool in his book The Happiness Advantage called the 20-second rule. This principle shows how we can re-route the path of least resistance and replace bad habits with good ones. It is very easy to use: identify the habits that you want to lose and make it 20 seconds more difficult to do them.

Addicted to cigarettes? Leave them upstairs or in the car, where they’re not so easily accessed. Lock up the alcohol and add an additional 20 seconds to the task by keeping the keys at the other side of the house (or don’t buy any, turning it into the 20-minute rule, by the time you’ve nipped to the off-licence). Want to escape work in the evening? Leave the smartphone and laptop in the furthest room (or at the office!).

The 20-second rule also works in developing new, good habits. If you want to exercise, make it 20 seconds easier: lay out your clothes the night before. Even better – go to sleep in your gym clothes! If you want to make a habit of prioritising your to-do list each day, keep it clearly visible on your desktop, rather than having to pull it up or look for it. Making things easier reduces the amount of willpower it takes to do it, thereby increasing your success.

When you make your bad habit harder to do while making the good habit easier, you are much more likely to take the easy route. It’s been proven by research that we will even do things that are less satisfying if it’s easier. Just because we know the right thing to do, we don’t automatically do it. Plan ahead, anticipating your needs, and aim to make things accessible and easy to do.

Always make your vice at least 20 seconds away, while making your virtue immediately available.

So use the 20-Second Rule. Create barriers to habits you want to resist, and make it easy for the desired ones.

Where will you use the 20 second rule.

Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

“Almighty God put something tough into human beings, called ‘the Will’ ,use it” William James(Psychologist)

Since self-control is essential to your success, it’s too important for it to be out of control. Mastery is much easier when you understand how you work – and take action to make yourself even better!
